May 11, 2018 marked 37 years since the Legend Bob Marley passed away. The musical icon passed in a hospital in Miami Florida not far from where I was born a few years later. Those who have been following me for a while often hear me refer to Bob as “Uncle Bobby”. This term of endearment is brought on by the immense connection his music gives me to my heritage, family and spirituality. Uncle Bobby made music that was powerful, unifying and intelligent! With simple lyrics like “One love, one heart. Let’s get together and feel alright” he managed to unite people of all races and backgrounds whilst making a clear point that we are all God’s children.
My adoration for Bob Marley runs over and over but I wondered was there more about him that I didn’t know? Over Mother’s Day weekend I decided to do some digging and put together 5 Things about Bob Marley that may surprise you!
I knew I was related to him! The psychic ability just runs in the family. Ha! Story says that his mother Cedella used to hear of him reading peoples palms around town. At first, she took it as a joke but soon realized his readings were accurate. Later, when he began to pursue his music he was quoted as saying “I’m not reading no more hand: I’m singing now.”
Uncle Bobby spent a month in jail for possession of marijuana. Who’s really surprised here. I wish I could go into the fact that this healing herb is now legal in much of the US although many black men are currently serving time for the same crime, but I digress. SMH
Nesta Robert Marley, switched his middle and first name around as a young child because some said Nesta could be confused as feminine.
Till this day the royalties from “No Woman No Cry” are sent directly to a soup kitchen in Jamaica.
It is noted Bob Marley’s final words to his son Ziggy before he transitioned due to cancer at the age of 36 were “Money can’t buy life.”
An angel still present with us through his legacy and music.
