Amethyst & The Catholic Church

Notwithstanding its popularity, for many decades, amethyst has been one of the most coveted stones in the world. Located in as many places as Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, Africa, Canada, Russia, USA and Europe, with its magnificent, darkened elegance, this stone has a rich history of great civilizations. While it is a simple decorative symbol around 25,000 B.C. for the Neolithic people in Europe, Ancient Greeks and Romans used amethyst from jewelry beads to amulets. These ancient civilizations have placed a high value in this stone. They believed that the essence of amethyst crystal was synonymous with luxury. As such, it has been depicted as part of their crowns, scepters and rings. Church bishops used to wear amethyst accessories in the shape of a ring. The purple color is meant to symbolize the sovereignty and obedience of God. Catholic clergymen wore amethyst stone in their crosses as their amethyst purpose was one of purity and celibacy. It is even believed that the breastplate of the high priest of Israel was fitted with an amethyst as his ninth gem. It is said that there were ten crystals on which the names of the tribes of Israel were etched, and it is claimed that the amethyst was one of those stones.

But does Amethyst have meaning? YES!

"A French poet created a story, in which Bacchus, the god of drunkenness was pursuing a maiden named Amethyste. She refused his attentions and fled. She prayed to the Gods to remain chaste and the Goddess Diana answered her prayer by turning her into a white stone. Humbled, Bacchus poured his wine over the stones, dying them purple. Amethyst has been used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to denote royalty and high class. The lush purple color was the color of the Gods and they used the stone in jewelry and ceremonial decoration. Archaeologists have found amethysts in roman digs, as well as European church sites. " says,
